Cooked August

Learning to cook feels like a superpower. In a single process, I can simultaneously save money, understand what I eat, engage with all my senses, work with my hands (in a non-digital domain), practice creative and spontaneous thinking, eat well, have virtually limitless choice, etc... Historically, it has been a challenge for me to invest the time needed to habituate it, so I decided to focus on it for a month; turning it into a web-projecty thing added extra motivation.

My initial parameters were to cook everyday, allow myself to eat out if I didn't have time, favour ingredients that I already had, try a diverse range of techniques, and start with a simple recipe book - I liked Leanne Brown's recipes (Good and Cheap; From Scratch) because they were unintimidating and not limited to a particular style of cooking or cuisine.

Beet and Chickpea Salad (via Good and Cheap)

beet; beans (chickpeas), nuts (cashews); lemon juice, mango powder, oil (olive oil), pepper, salt, vinegar

cashews weren’t the right substitute here… peanuts were perfect

Dill Omelette (via Good and Cheap)

little browned, but still better than any omelette I’ve made in the past

I made the mistake of not washing my pan as soon as this was ready; I am unsure if it was the dates, the onion, or the toast that was burned and stuck to the pan…

Sundae Simulation (via the pantry)

ice cream; nuts (crushed peanuts); jam, peanut butter (melted)

after pouring the peanut butter, should have put the bowl in the freezer so that it can harden a bit. much less jam required; saving some for later

Banana French Toast (via the pantry)

should have listened to the quinoa and not the timer; was overcooked and a little soggy

placing soaked bread on bare hot pan seemed too dry; with butter seemed to make it stick; with non-stick vegetable spray was not too bad with some pressing and on lowered heat

I forgot the milk… These three were okay on the outside and inconsistent in, the other three were a crumbly disaster
